Mark has donated a brand new Fender Mark Knopfler Signature Stratocaster to AMREF, Africa’s leading health organisation, with over 50 years experience of saving and transforming lives in urban slums and remote rural communities across Africa. The guitar is being auctioned on ebay to raise money for AMREFf’s Katine Project. This is a unique partnership launched last year with The Guardian and Barclays to transform the lives of 25,000 people who live in the poor and remote sub-county of Katine, in north-east Uganda. Each year at this time, Mark lends his support the GOSH Starcards Xmas auction. GOSH raises funds on behalf of London’s Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. This year’s auction starts at 8 pm (GMT) on the 24th of November and closes at the same time on the 4th of December. So, if you would like to own a beautiful 610 cm x 435 cm wall display which features a Jack of Clubs playing card personally signed by Mark together with a high quality 10×8 inch colour photograph, an original ticket and pass for the KTGC concert which took place at the Brighton Centre in the UK on the 24th of May plus a lovely Starcards presentation plaque all mounted in a silver effect frame then get ready to bid generously ! Mark has donated a signed guitar to Rock For Kids, a Chicago charity that raises money to provide music education to children who wouldn’t be able to afford it otherwise. This week, MTV returned to its musical roots, launching the new website, MTVMusic.com. The site hosts music videos dating back to the early days of the network. With its signature refrain, ‘I want my MTV’, Dire Straits’ Money for Nothing was the site’s most viewed video during its first few days, outpacing other classic videos like Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and chart toppers such as the new Brittney Spears’ cut, ‘Womanizer’.

Following a two-year collaboration, John Illsley and Greg Pearle are to release their new album on the 13th of September. The album, Beautiful You, was recorded at Mark’s studio and featured guest artists are Guy Fletcher and Paul Brady. A single from the album, Secret Garden, will be released on the 6th of October. John and Greg will be undertaking a short UK tour early 2009. Live promotion will commence with a showcase performance at London’s Bush Hall on the 7th of October. George Jones is releasing a duets album Burn Your Playhouse Down on August 19th, 2008. The album is a collection of never before heard duets recorded between Jones and many illustrious guests, and includes the track I Always Get Lucky With You featuring Mark. The recordings range from the mid-70s with George’s ex-wife, the First Lady of Country Music, Tammy Wynette to the most recent recording from 2007 with his daughter, Georgette, the only child from the union of George and Tammy.COMMENT

KGRL’s “Flower-powered Artist” of April 2008, Jesca Hoop, has joined the Kill To Get Crimson tour as Mark’s supporting act for all North American dates.
Hoop’s major label debut, Kismet, has been described as “seductive, fun and entirely mesmerizing”. Tom Waits helped kick-start the singer-songwriter’s career after hearing an early version of ‘Seed of Wonder’.
