Tina Turner
Tina Turner was born Annie Mae Bullock near Brownsville, TN in 1938. She made her first appearance as an 18 year old backup singer for Ike Turner, becoming the star of Ike’s revue just two years later. For the next 18 years, against a backdrop of drugs and domestic violence, Ike and Tina set the music world on fire with such hits as A Fool in Love, Proud Mary, and Sexy Ida, Pt. 1.
After Tina left Ike, both as a wife and a performing partner, she took on the role of The Acid Queen in the film version of “Tommy”. While there were several albums released throughout the late ‘70’s, Tina seemed to fade altogether from the popular music landscape. But by 1984, Tina was back. The previous year, she recorded a cover of Ball of Confusion with Heaven 17, which led to a contract with Capitol and the iconic, hit-filled album “Private Dancer”.
The title track on “Private Dancer” was composed by Mark Knopfler when he was writing new songs for Dire Straits’ “Love Over Gold”. However, he decided the song was more suited to a female vocalist, written, as it was, from the woman’s point of view. He not only gave Tina the song to record, but his Dire Straits bandmates are the backing band on the track. Mark also has guitar credits on the albums “Foreign Affair” and “Break Every Rule”, on which he also has a production credit.
