    Re: Kill to Get Crimson

Anybody else having problem ripping this new album to computer?

Amazon just sent me the second one, and either they did something to it to make it not seen by the PC, or the ones that amazon has had a real light burn in. I just can't get the PC to see it, so I can't rip it and put it on my MP3 player.

I listen to everything MK has done all the way back to his first Dire Straits album.  I've been listening to this new disc, almost literally, end to end for the last week.  Wow.  I think it is amazing and shows MK's musical genius in every category - writer, composer, musician and singer.  His work, to me,  just seems to get better and better.

    Re: Kill to Get Crimson

    Hi All,

I recently came to purchase the "kill to get crimson" album as a big fan of the "knopfler guitar sound" => good stuff.

Especially the "scaffolders wife" song wish has a couple of mini guitar solo's with a mind blowing sound.

I wonder if any of you guys could help me out and tell me how Mark achieves this sound (guitar/amp) since I am waiting to see him live next year in march to see/hear his set up.

Thans in advance for giving me back my nightsleep in stead of wondering on the net to try to find live footage of this song (no succes yet).

     Greetz, Jelle

Hello,  i can understand, even if i don´t agree, some of the guys who didn't like the album. For me there are two types of music listeners, the musicians and the music lovers (meening a guy who likes to hear music). A musician listen´s to a song in a radical diferent way than a music enjoyer. I'm a musician mates and to me the album is fantastic. Is it a bit slow? Maby. Is it musicaly rich and great? Deffinitly!!

He just made something a bit different, i see everyone just talking about solos, solos and more bloody solos! Music isn´t just solos you know...

Some one said  "is music is all about his guitar", with respect for your oppinion but is not! His music is the whole song. He doesnt center the song on his guitar playing, but on the song it self, and that is what makes him great. Just my oppinion anyway.

    Regards

Well said Jorge!    I believe there was a line in the Rolling Stone review of KTGC that referred to Mark as a "recovering" guitar god. He has found a way to move his talent on the fretboard away from the focalpoint of the music....and use it in a way to enhance the listeners experience without drowning out the true focalpoint...his poetic lyrics. Your opinion isnt "just" your opinion...its shared by quite a few of us! Thought you might want to know that we all pretty much feel the same as you do.   Thanks for posting this!!

    Re: Kill to Get Crimson

Just been listening to the KTGC album some more, and the musical and lyrical quality of the whole album it's amazing!! I'm a sucker for celtic and trad Irish/Schotish music (big Corrs fan Smile who are also musicaly fantastic) and i just love "The Fish And The Bird".

I'm shure however that MK will be rocking away on the KTGC tour. I see a lot of people complain that he dosen´t play a lot of DS songs on the tour, well this are solo tours not DS tours. I think he plays a lot of DS songs on the tour, mainly because of the fans. I like Tunel of Love a lot but i don´t think that MK playing it on this tour is a matter of life and death...

Honestly i would rather he played the live version of Portobello Belle as it is on the Money For Nothing album Wink but then again without Alan Clark on piano...

    Re: Kill to Get Crimson

Hallo. The new record is a very different one, and it took me long time to get into it. I think it's a very laid back album, but I like it. " punish the monkey " is a wonderful track full of the fresh Dire Straits sound that I like so much. " behind with the rent " is also a great track and same thing for " madame genevas ". Good solid stuff from the master, but I miss his fantastic guitarriffs on this new album.

    Thank you.

    Re: Kill to Get Crimson

    Very good album indeed.

I particularly love THE SCAFFOLDER'S WIFE, HEART FULL OF HOLES, PUNISH THE MONKEY, MADAME GENEVA'S.

However I also long for the time when Mr Knopfler liked to create exceptional guitar riffs.

Now it seems that era is over if we consider the last quieter 2 solo albums, and also if we consider what Guy Fletcher says about the long- forgotten Guitar God/Guitar Hero stuff.

I've heard rumours saying that MK suffered from osteoarthritis these days, making it difficult for him to play like he used to.

Coincidently, one can also remark that this softer songwriter move in his career really started after (or as a consequence of?) his motorcycle accident.

    Any opinion on this?

    Re: Kill to Get Crimson

Hi.Listening to interviews Mark carried out during the launch of the new album and also on the BBC Radio2 showcase gig,he said he was very keen to recreate the twangy guitar sound that was around when he was growing up (Hank Marvin & Duane Eddy he mentioned) because he really loved that sound.

Also with regard to Kill to get Crimson,he said he felt like that about getting a red Stratocaster guitar back then.

As for the finger style,I'm looking forward to finding out as probably you are in the very near future!!

    Re: Kill to Get Crimson

Also, I appreciate what he said about the painting  (cuz it's what I thought, too) that from a painter's point of view, the only way to get a truer red (crimson) would be to, ya know, to kill.......(something to that effect)...
