Hello LEPI: It's great to read your list of the top ten DS' songs...We agree on 3 songs in no particular order..This shows how many good songs DS' has put out, and how diverse is the taste of everyone even with the same group...Sultans of swing is definitely one of the most amazing songs in the history of rock...Today in my list is Nº4, but for a long time was Nº1...Your list is well balanced between slow and fast paced songs.....Thanks for your time and have a nice day....................."Once upon a time in the west, oh yea, once upon a time in the west"......Yes

Hello stranger 418: Thanks for participating in this exercise of choosing DS' top ten songs..I like your list, we agree on 5 songs in no particular order...As you can see, DS' music is so good that people from all corners of the world like it..Here in my country(Colombia), rock is not as popular as other types of music, but is getting more and more popular...I tell you, lately I listen to my favourite song(once upon a time in the west), at least 5 times every day..It makes me happy, it brightens my day, it gives me joy to listen to this song, but I listen to all  songs periodically....The nicest thing about DS' music is that you never get tired of it...I am a big Football fan and I see that Croatia is a great team...Best regards from across the Atlantic and lets keep talking about DS and listening to this great music............"And he makes it fast with one more thing, we are the sultans os swing"..........Yes

Music No problem, I always enjoy talking about good music. And this forum is a great place to do so, I mean you can talk to people from all over the world about their impresions with MK/DS, read about the concerts they've been to, great stuff I tell you. I'm just sad i haven't started with this sooner cause I'm rather new to this community.. And yea we do have a very good football team, personally not a big fan (I'm more into motosports F1, WRC etc. and i just love snooker) but it's always a thrill to watch you'r national team playing EURO or WORLD cup. Best whishes Music

Re: Dire Straits Top ten songs...

You know what?! This compilation thread urged me into creating a brand new comp to listen to in my car. It required 2 cds (and it's a minimum according to me) but it's definitely a great selection, I think. (Sultans of swing and Romeo and Juliet are missing, just cos' I'm a bit tired of them at the moment, but I love them anyway).

    CD1:

    Down to the waterline

    Lions

    Wild west end

Where do you think you're going?

Once upon a time in the west

    Single handed sailor

    News

    Skateaway

    Tunnel of love

    Expresso love

    Solid rock

    Twisting by the pool (remix)

    If I had you

    Love over gold

    Private investigations

    Portobello belle (live)

    CD2:

    Telegraph road (live - edit)

    Industrial disease

    Money for nothing (edit)

    Walk of life

    Your latest trick

    So far away (edit)

    Ride across the river

    Brothers in arms (edit)

    Calling Elvis (edit)

    On every street (edit)

    The bug

    You and your friend

    Heavy fuel (edit)

Going home - Theme of the Local Hero

Hello aurelienbrusset: Both CD's are great...The good thing about DS' music is that everything is so good, that you can choose any song and is a good one..Enjoy your CD's, and I am sure your ride in your car will be much more pleasant listening to DS' music........................."I wanna live on solid rock, I'm gonna live on solid rock".........Have a nice day in France, good luck with your music......Yes

Re: Dire Straits Top ten songs...

Hello denmark: Well I promised you that I would answer your question about Mark's solo albums and here it is.....I think they are great like everything Mark has done in his life...I like many groups, I like Rock, pop, disco, Jazz, new wave, Rock in spanish, classical....But Mark's talent stands out immediately..When he was with Dire Straits the music was superb and now in his solo career, his music is just as good...My favourite solo album is the last one, "Kill to get Crimson"...But I also like a lot "Sailing to Philadelphia"...It's Just recently that I began to listen to Mark's solo work, and is taking me a while to choose my top ten, but here they are, it may change, but today this is it....

1º) "What It Is"...Beautiful song, nice singing, impecable guitar, love the fast pace of the song...

2º) "Punish The Monkey"...Another beauty, original, beautiful guitar, love the lyrics...

3º) "Boom, Like That"...Love the start of the song, Beautiful melody, great guitar and drums...

4º) "Silvertown Blues"...Great melow song, Just amazing how his voice makes the song...

5º) "Prairie Wedding"...Love the western style start of the song, nice all around song...

6º) "Why Aye Man"...Great, original song, love the end where his voice sounds like out of space...

7º) "Madame Geneva's"...Beautiful slow song, his guitar is always a treat...

8º) "Darling Pretty"...Superb guitar work, love the drums solid and clean, just great.

9º) "We Can Get Wild"...Great guitar, great voice, beautiful melody, another hit..

10º) "Behind With The Rent"...Nice pace, melow and at the same time intense, nice song..

Well, there you have it denmark, now I'm really curious to know your top ten of Mark's solo work...talk to you later..................................."No fears alone at night she's sailing through the crowd, in her ears the phones are tight and the music's playing loud".......Yes

I' ve no news about what I' m telling, but it seems to me that both "Prairie Wedding" and "Once Upon A Time In The West", are partly inspired on the Sergio Leone movies.

One of these right start with a woman coming to town by train, at those times trains were not of course electric and you could see "The smoke clear". And in the movie, that woman has come to marry a man... even if, later, it turns out that they were already married. And... she "looks like an angel", of course, what a pretty actress!

"Once Upon A Time In The West": it starts from the title. And then there' s that second guitar, sounding like a desert snake in those kinds of movies...

Re: Dire Straits Top ten songs...

    Hi,

You asked for my top ten of Mark's solo work.

    Here we go then,

    1) Are we in trouble now. (guitar playing always brings a lump to the throat)

    2) What it is (loved it right from first hearing)

    3) Sailing to Philadelphia (great song great story)

    4) Darling Pretty (Fantastic guitar again)

    5) Golden Heart (try it at high volume, fantastic)

    6) Nobody's got the gun (secret to a good relationship/marriage)

7 Hill Farmer's Blues (love it even more now I've heard it live)

    8) Old Pigweed (strange choice some may say,but I just love the humour and the sentiment of this song)

    9) 5.15 am ( wouldn't leave this one out)

    10) Boom like that (great song/story,can't drive past a MacDonalds without thinking about it)

Reserves (cheating again!!) Behind with the rent;In the sky;The trawlermans song;Back to Tupelo;Silvertown Blues.etc.etc.etc.etc. Really difficult to pick just ten.

If I had to choose just one solo career song and one Dire Straits it would be Sailing to Philadelphia (solo) and Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits).

    Regards

Gonna get my licks in now before I go".

Re: Dire Straits Top ten songs...

Hello denmark: Your list is a good one and I must admit that "Sailing to Philadelphia" was for a while among my top 5 of Mark's solo work....And, yes, "Golden Heart" is a beauty, but I heard it so much that I'm giving it a small vacation for now......We agree on 3 songs in no particular order, but I like your list, and at least 3 of the songs in your list, were in my top 10 not long ago.....But you are right, it's a hard test  trying to choose 10 songs when they are all superb.......It's interesting that you mention "Romeo and Juliet" as your all-time favourite DS' song, because I really fell in love with DS' music listening to this song....."Romeo and Juliet" was, for years, my Nº1 choice........These days I can't stop hearing "Once upon a time in the west", a truly masterpiece of Rock music and one of the best guitar works I've ever heard.........Man you are so funny, ja ja, when you say that your Nº6 song  is the secret to a good relationship/marriage, ja ja......By the way I love english humor, specially Monthy Python, Benny Hill, Mr. Bean, etc..English humor, I think, is very original and intelligent.......Regards from the tropic.............."But all I can do is hand it to you, and your latest trick"..........Yes

The movie is: C' Era Una Volta Il West (Once Upon A Time In The West), by Sergio Leone, released in 1968. You see that woman coming by train to meet her husband, your see the smoke clear and she is so pretty... but in the movie, there' s no lovestruck-MK waiting for her at the station. Unfortunately, the husband she has come to meet is already gone... dead.

The actress we are talking about is: Claudia Cardinale. You can see some pics from the movie in the net, but you know they are 40 years old: she was truly a beauty at that time. Now Claudia is 70, she looks like... well... the elder sister of an angel. Which does not mean: ugly.

I believe only mean persons grow ugly.

    I have changed my list a few times, but today my list is this;

My list has changed as well but today this is it: Love Over Gold,  Calling Elvis,  On Every Street,  Romeo and Juliet, Tunnel of Love,  Brothers in Arms,  Wild West End,  Sultans of Swing, Walk of Life, Telegraph Road

On the 19th of next month, I will have just seen MK on back to back nights, I'm sure it will be the highlight of my summer

How hot is it in Colombia these days? We seem to be in the rainy season over here in central Canada, but it changes fast at this time of year

Hi AnnaMaria: Thanks for the info..Claudia Cardinale was and still is for her age, a very pretty woman...I have not seen the movie, but I've heard of it....I've seen Claudia Cardinale in other movies(Gatopardo in spanish) and I believe in her golden years she was considered one of the most beautiful women......Right now I'm listening to "Once upon a time in the west" and is such a great song that you wish it was 20 minutes long instead of 10......Well, take care......ciao................................"He do the walk, he do the walk of life"..........Yes

Re: Dire Straits Top ten songs...

Hello roundabout: It's great to be able to communicate with you in central Canada...Your list is very interesting, we agree on 4 songs in no particular order...You are absolutely right, the list changes from time to time, and I think Dire Straits music is perhaps the best rock music I've heard...Of course, it's all a matter of tastes...Good for you that you will see Mark on the 19th of July in Beautiful Canada....I've never been to Canada, although I've been very close(Niagara Falls)....Well, Colombia is very diverse climate wise, eventhough we are in the ecuator, not all the cities are hot...For example Bogotá(the capital) is 2.600 meters above sea level and it's a cold city. The temperature early in the mornings can be below zero degrees Celsius...On the other hand we have cities that are extremely hot like Barranquilla, Cartagena, that are in the coast(38 degrees celsius)...My city(Medellin) has perhaps the best climate you could ask for, between 18 and 28 degrees celsius all year round...Right now it's raining a lot in the whole country and we have some flooding....You tell me that is also raining in central Canada and watching the floods in the US, China, and other countries, you wonder if it's just normal nature acting as it always does, or it's man that is changing the whole planet.....Thanks for your list, good luck in the concert, and have a nice day in central Canada, by the way, which part of central Canada?.....Best regards from the tropic................"Juliet the dice were loaded from the start".........Yes
