What songs of Marks grabbed you on the first hearing, songs you couldn't get out of your head for ages? Mine were from the Straits days "Tunnel of Love" (brought back memories of my teenage years hanging around Fairgrounds and the extremely loud and fantastic music and the girls!!) and also for the haunting guitar solo at the end, which you didn't want to fade away.Still play it at max volume in the car to this day! From the solo career "Sailing to Philadelphia" just a fantastic song, still love playing it. Regards
"You only get one life, this I know. Gonna get my licks in now before I go".

Instant songs by Dire Straits: Walk Of Life (song thanks to which I discovered DS in 1988 when I was 10!) Money For Nothing Brothers In Arms Sultans Of Swing Down To The Waterline (which really deserves to appear on the BEST OF's!) Private Investigations Your Latest Trick Twisting By The Pool Where Do You Think You're Going (has its place in the BEST OF's too!!) Romeo And Juliet On Every Street The Bug ...Just to name a few... These are the hits, so to speak. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Instant songs by MK now: First and foremost I must say I also intantly loved the whole Golden Heart record back in 1996 and instant faves were: Imelda Golden Heart Cannibals Je Suis Désolé Are We In Trouble Now Don't You Get It (for its fine solos especially!!) Then came the STP album with: What It Is (THE song!! I've already commented on that one somewhere in the forum) Silvertown Blues Speedway at Nazareth Sailing To Philadelphia The Ragpicker's Dream: Why Aye Man Quality Shoe Hillfarmer's Blues Devil Baby Shangri-La: Postcards From Paraguay The Trawlerman's Song Sucker Row 5.15 am ATRR with E. Harris: Beachcombing I Dug Up A Diamond Rollin' on KTGC: The Scaffolder's Wife Punish The Monkey Heart full Of Holes The Fizzy And The Still Madame Geneva's

aurelienbrusset: ATRR with E. Harris: Beachcombing I Dug Up A Diamond Rollin' on
I have to say, Rollin' on stuck on my ears by the first time. Don' t know if it' s because I had heard something similar before... or for that round of bass notes upon which the whole song is constructed, it enters my head and don' t come out. Other two songs that hit me were: Beyond my wildest dreams; Red staggerwing: because I often listen to danceable traditionals, and that song is very similar

My wife and I used Beyond My Wildest Dreams to end our wedding's ceremony at the City Hall. Also used the instrumental theme to Metroland when going out of the chapel. ...If anyone cares, which I doubt!

Well I'm 22 now and the first song I listened to was Lady Writter when I was about 15, and from there I begun a long journey up to today. A big big day for me, as I'm going to see Mark live for the first time! Other instant songs for me were Down to the wateline, Sultans, Tunnel of Love, What it is, Brothers in arms, ... Those are the ones I can think of right now, but there are so many great ones.... "Now the sun's gone to hell, and the moon's riding high"

...sure, I care...that's really cool....and if MrMark knew that he'd probably be very touched...I'm new on here, but I love how everyone is so enthusiastic about his music...my family thinks I have MK on the brain (sometimes I do) but I'm glad this is here as an outlet....or we might just combust spontaniously...

... well... I am personally allergic to marriage. One of the first things I told my Franco (more than 18 years since we stuck together), was: Man, if you want to get married, I respect your opinion. But you gonna marry someone else. ... but having Beyond my wildest dreams as a soundtrack could be one of the very few things that could make me change my mind.

Hello denmark: You and your excellent posts...This is a great subject because everyone has been through this..We have heard songs that hit us like a misil and we never looked back....Dire Straits has hit me with several songs that I couldn't stop listening for hours and hours....Every once in a while I can listen to the same song over and over for hours and it seems that it's impossible to get away from the CD player...One day I stayed several hours(8-10) listening to DS' songs straight, no eating, no pipi, no phone calls, no nothing, just pure music from DS..The following DS songs have hit me instantly harder and sweeter than any other music: 1º) "Romeo And Juliet" 2º) "Once Upon A Time In The West" 3º) "Tunnel Of Love" 4º) "Lady Writer" 5º) "Skateaway" 6º) "Sultans Of Swing" 7º) "Solid Rock" 8º) "Your Latest Trick" 9º) "Expresso Love" 10º) "Water Of Love" The following Mark's solo songs have hit me instantly: 1º) "What It Is" 2º) "Boom, Like That" 3º) "Punish The Monkey" 4º) "Why Aye Man" 5º) " Silvertown Blues" 6º) "Darling Pretty" 7º) "Baloney Again" 8º) "The Trawlerman's Song" 9º) "Everybody Pays" 10º) "Donegan's Gone" Regards,........................................"And I recall my fall from grace, Another time another place"....

I guess I was a bit restrictive in my last post about the Straits' instant songs last time! Here are some others, album after album. Dire Straits: Sultans of swing Down to the waterline Wild west end Water of love Communiqué: Lady writer News Once upon a tme in the west Where do you think you're going Making Movies: Tunnel of love Romeo and juliet skateaway Expresso love Solid rock Love Over Gold: Private investigations Industrial disease Love over Gold I would tend to say Telegraph Road, but it takes a little more time to fully tame it (I started listening to it when I was 10, so that's very young to apprehend such a symphony!! Nevertheless it rapidly grew on me. Brothers In Arms: Money for nothing Walk of life Brothers in arms So far away Your latest trick Ride across the river The man's too strong Money For Nothing Comp: Twisting by the pool Apart from all the songs I've already listed, this comp contained a fantastic version of Portobello Belle, played during the 1982-1983 Love Over Gold tour. On Every Street: Calling Elvis Heavy fuel The bug On every street You and your friend Iron hand Planet of News Orleans I must simply precise something: "instant songs" doesn't necessarily means "favourite ones". Some other songs are discovered later, after listening to the instant songs that have stricken you first. And then you end up digging the whole fxxx catalogue, which is truely awesome, to say the least!
