Tuesday - 2nd August 2011
This year sees the 40th anniversary of The Old Grey Whistle Test. The OGWT was launched in the UK in 1971 and until 1998 it was the BBC's flagship music programme providing the first British exposure to the likes of Bob Marley, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Steely Dan and Billy Joel. Many of you will have seen the 1978 footage of Dire Straits perfoming Sultans of Swing on the OGWT.
The story goes that the show got its unusual name from the USA where songs written by people such as Carole King and Gerry Goffin where perfomed before RKO cleaning staff many of whom were in their mature years and had greying hair. If they could whistle the tune after hearing it, it was said to have passed the 'old grey whistle test'. Bob Harris, who presented the OGWT for many years, tells a slightly different version. "It was a 'tin pan
alley' phrase from years ago." says Bob, "When they got the first pressing of a record
they would play it to people they called the old greys [doormen in grey suits].
The ones they could remember and could whistle having heard it just once or
twice had passed the old grey whistle test."
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, various artistes who performed on the OGWT will be featured in a series of programmes on BBC Radio 2. Bob Harris' interview with Mark is scheduled to be aired at 10 pm on the 5th of October. The OGWT at 40 radio series will go up on the BBC iPlayer in its own dedicated area for the duration of the whole series. It will not be downloadable but will give you the opportunity to stay in touch with the broadcasts if you come to them late. Each show will be added up to the iPlayer the week it airs and will remain there until the series finiahes on January 5th 2012.

players who are the best in their field. The band will consist of Richard
Bennett on guitar, Guy Fletcher on keyboards, Jim Cox on piano, John McCusker on
violin & cittern, Mike McGoldrick on flute, whistle & pipes, Glenn Worf
on bass and Ian Thomas on drums.
Mark has taken a break from
recording his next album in order to participate in what is likely to be the
must see show of the year. Mark's association with Dylan dates back to 1979 when
he played on Dylan's Slow Train Coming Sessions and then produced Bob's
acclaimed 1983 release Infidels.
Mark says, "I'm much looking forward to going out
on the road with Bob in such a special year. Also, it was an honour to be asked
to record one of Bob's songs on the forthcoming Amnesty International 50th
anniversary album to mark his 70th birthday" Check out the dates and starting from Saturday 16th July mk.com ticket sales

Guitarists are invited to audition online for the chance to win a one-to-one mentoring session with Mark Knopfler
PureSolo.com, the online music recording community, has teamed up with guitarist Mark Knopfler to launch an online guitar competition, in which guitarists are given the chance to win a master class with Mark at his private studios in London.
The competition's unique method of entry offers guitarists the opportunity to take the place of Knopfler on three original recordings. These tracks have been specially remastered with the lead guitar part removed and entrants are invited to re-record this part in their own style.
Guitarists without access to recording equipment need not worry, as all the tools needed to create their competition entry are provided at PureSolo.com. The site boasts an online recording facility that makes it easy for anyone to record music using just a microphone and computer.
Once submitted for entry, songs can be played and rated by other members of the PureSolo community, eventually creating a shortlist from which the winning recording will be chosen by an expert panel of judges including Mark Knopfler.
Joining Mark on the judging panel are Chris Vinnicombe, Guitar Editor at MusicRadar.com; and Harvey Newquist, author and founder of The National Guitar Museum.
The competition launches today, June 14, and will run until August 31. The original backing tracks required for entry are exclusively available at PureSolo.com and are priced at £1.99. Once purchased, PureSolo tracks can be re-recorded an unlimited number of times.
The competition prize includes a return economy flight from anywhere in the world and two nights in a 5* hotel in London. There will also be a prize for the competition's runner up, a Fender guitar courtesy of The National Guitar Museum.

Dear All,
Unfortunately, there was a major problem last night at the first
night in London and many of you had to queue for much longer than we would have
liked. This was caused by understaffing and lack of preparedness by the Albert
Hall for which I can only apologise. I wanted to write to everybody to say
thanks for being so patient and to apologise for the ticketing pick up not being
as efficient as it should have been. We have now taken additional steps to
ensure that this won't happen again.
I look forward to seeing you all at an
MK show in the future and thanks for your continued support.
All the
best
Paul Crockford

Thursday - 5th November 2009
The second digital single from Mark's Get Lucky album will be Remembrance Day/Piper To The End. This single will be released on the 9th of November and proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal, a UK charity providing support to the serving and ex-service community and their dependents. Proceeds from the US release will go to a similar charity in the United States (details to be confirmed). Hostilities during the First World War ceased at the 11th hour of the11th day of the 11th month of 1918 and this day is designated Remembrance Day (aka. Armistice Day).
The second track of the new single has personal significance for Mark: "'Piper To The End' is for my uncle Freddie, Lance Corporal Frederick John Laidler, a piper of the 1st Battalion, Tyneside Scottish, The Black Watch, RHR, who carried his pipes into action and was killed with them at Ficheux, near Arras, on the 20th of May, 1940, aged 20."
For the past two years, the Royal British Legion has organised an event called Silence in the Square which aims to achieve a re-instatement of the traditional two minute silence held at 11 am on the 11th of November in remembrance of the fallen in the two twentieth-century World Wars and other conflicts. Last year, the event drew 10,000 participants for a very moving ceremony involving performances, readings and an invitation to the public to scatter poppies on the water of the fountains in central London's Trafalgar Square.
Mark will perform Remembrance Day in Trafalgar Square shortly before 11 am next Wednesday, 11th November, 2009.

Some important things to note. There is a limit of four (4) tickets per order on all presales for the Get Lucky Tour. Also, tickets for all shows will be available for pickup at the venue's box office on the night of the show only.
